It is fantastic to announce that the Candoco Dance Company is coming to Elefantteateret in Stavanger for two days of Teachers Training on September 14th and 15th. Participants will gain insight into the company's history and artistry, as well as learn and engage in their methodology and principles for working with inclusive dance.

The workshop will be conducted in English and led by Dominic Mitchell, Co-Artistic Director of Candoco.

Bridging the mainstream and the experimental, our bold approach and powerful collaborations create distinctive performances and far-reaching learning experiences. We celebrate different ways of seeing, of being and of making art, putting us at the forefront of conversation around dance and disability.

Candoco Dance Company - 2-day Teachers Training

Day 1 - Community Activities: Community Panel Presentation and Open-Level Movement Classes

Presentation & Movement Classes

The presentation will cover Candoco's history, methodology, and some of the approaches and key theories within the scholarship of crip/inclusive practices. Participants will then have the opportunity to experience a movement class that explores these ideas. They can choose to participate in both activities or just one, depending on their interests and availability.

There will likely be two movement classes: one taught by Dominic Mitchell, and the second by a Candoco artist (to be confirmed). The Candoco artist's class will be based on their practice and Dominic's will integrate Katherine Dunham's philosophy and practice.

Day 2 - Teacher Training: Accessible Pedagogy, Improvisational Tasks, Theory, Movement Class

Accessible Pedagogy

We will explore language and lesson plans that leverage inclusive practices and responsive skill-building. The focus is on enabling participants to consider how they can be responsive to the individuals present and the needs within a dance class. Additionally, participants will learn improvisational tasks that can be integrated into an inclusive dance class.

Improvisational Tasks

Improvisational tasks are assignments given by the facilitator for the dancers to perform. They are treated as "scores," meaning they can be performed and repeated. Although each performance of the score may vary, the composition and chronology remain consistent and repeatable.

On Day 2, a small amount of theory will be provided, focusing mainly on the corresponding tasks utilized within the workshop. Additionally, the Candoco artist will host a short class on this day.
